The Art of Journaling from a Journaling Hater

typewriter

Journaling has long been a trusted companion for self-reflection and growth, offering a safe space to explore thoughts, emotions, and ideas. Whether you're jotting down a quick note or filling pages with your innermost reflections, the act of journaling can be transformative. With the holiday season upon us—a time often brimming with joy, stress, and nostalgia—journaling can serve as a grounding tool to navigate emotions and savor meaningful moments. But what exactly is journaling, and how can it become a valuable part of your life, especially during the holidays? Oh, and did I say that I hate journaling?? I do! Van, my husband, is an avid journaler and has even taught journaling workshops. but, even as a hater, I've learned the value. Especially since journaling can look the way you want it to look!

Let’s dive in.

What is Journaling?

At its core, journaling is the act of recording thoughts, experiences, and feelings in a structured or freeform way. While traditional journaling often conjures up images of handwritten diaries, it can take many forms—digital, visual, or even audio recordings. Journaling is a personal practice, allowing for endless creativity and adaptability to fit individual needs.

Journaling is a time we take to clear our minds and settle our hearts.

Why Is Journaling Important?

Journaling is more than just writing; it’s a mental decluttering process. A brain dump and heart dump or sorts. By putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, paint to paper...), you can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety by externalizing worries.

  • Gain clarity and perspective on decisions or challenges.

  • Track personal growth over time.

  • Cultivate gratitude and positivity by focusing on what went well.

Research even suggests that journaling can improve mental health, boost memory, and enhance problem-solving skills.

Atypical Ways to Journal

Journaling doesn't have to follow the traditional "Dear Diary" format. Explore these creative options:

  • Bullet Journaling: A structured system for organizing tasks, habits, and reflections.

  • Art Journaling: Combine sketches, collages, or photos with written entries.

  • Gratitude Journaling: Focus solely on things you're thankful for each day.

  • Prompt-Based Journaling: Use questions or prompts to inspire your writing.

  • Voice Notes: Record your thoughts aloud for a dynamic approach.

  • Instrumental Journaling: Pull out your instrament and "free play", just play as your heart feels led and use it as your outlet.

  • Nature: Go for a walk and find items that you can use as a story collage to help let out your feelings and thoughts.

  • Photo Journaling: Take out your camera and go for a walk, snap images that evoke certain emotions, then compile them into a story by putting them in an album, slide show etc.

  • Free Writing: Freely express your thoughts without worrying about the grammar, spelling, structure etc. Just release the thoughts.

  • List: For many people just making lists can serve the purpose.

How Often Should You Journal?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people journal daily to maintain a steady routine, while others turn to it only during times of need. Consistency is key if you want to develop it as a habit, but flexibility ensures it remains a source of joy rather than a chore. Start with 5-10 minutes a few times a week and adjust as it suits you. By making journaling a habit or at least a tool you keep on hand, you are investing in your own mental, emotional and physical well-being.

How Could Journaling Through the Holidays Be Helpful?

The holiday season can stir a mix of emotions, from excitement to overwhelm. Journaling offers a space to:

  • Process Emotions: Reflect on challenges or joy during the holiday rush as well as expressing honesty feelings such as fear, nervousness, and anxiety. There is no shame, they are your feelings, and they are real.

  • Set Intentions: Focus on what matters most, like meaningful connections or personal goals. Set intentions about how you will keep healthy boundaries - by thinking through scenarios ahead of time you can be ready to respond with your best self.

  • Capture Memories: Document special moments, holiday recipes, or traditions.

  • Plan & Organize: Manage to-do lists, gift ideas, or schedules.

Tips for Getting Started

  1. Find Your Space: Create a calm, distraction-free area to journal. But, if your relaxing place in smack in the middle of a city, you may find those sounds comforting too. My space is outdoors or by a fire. Your space is yours, wherever you feel safe and settled.

  2. Choose Your Tools: A beautiful notebook or digital app can inspire consistency. I like to keep an art journal handy and I love a new pen!

  3. Be Honest: Write without judgment or the need for perfection.

  4. Experiment: Try different formats to discover what resonates with you. You can change it up and you can fall back on tried-and-true. It's up to you.

Journaling is more than a tool—it's a journey of self-discovery and mindfulness. As the holidays unfold, let your journal be a place to pause, reflect, and stay grounded amidst the hustle and bustle. Whether you're new to journaling or a seasoned writer, there's always room to adapt and grow your practice. Do I still hate journaling? Kinda, What I hate is the idea of sitting down and writing in a traditional journalling style, but knowing I can express myself my own way has taught me to let go and embrace journaling. If you are like me a good place to start is the Human Being Journal. I received a copy in one of those monthly subscription boxes, rolled my eyes and tossed it aside. Later, I picked it up and thought, wow! This is different, actually this is like how I coach people! I dove in and it was a game changer for me.

Why not begin today? With just a few words, you can create a space for yourself that offers clarity, peace, and inspiration—this season and beyond.
