Being Merry & Bright from Within

christmas tree

The holiday season is often filled with joy, excitement, and time spent with loved ones, but it’s also a time when schedules overflow, rest takes a back seat, and expectations can feel heavier than a sack of presents. To truly embrace the magic of the holidays, self-care becomes essential—not as a luxury, but as a way to honor and respect yourself. This season, being “bright and merry” starts from within. By nurturing your mind and body, you not only give yourself the gift of peace but also show up as the best version of yourself for those around you.

5 Ways to help you be Merry & Bright from within:

1. Maintaining a Regular Routine During the Holidays

It’s easy for routines to slip during the holiday hustle, but consistency can help you stay grounded. Whether it’s your morning cup of tea, a 10-minute meditation, or an afternoon walk, holding on to simple daily habits can reduce stress and create stability. Find small anchors in your day that make you feel calm and centered, and let them be non-negotiable. A healthy routine doesn’t mean rigidity—it’s about keeping what serves you most.

2. Making Space for Rest and Sleep

Amid the endless holiday to-do lists, rest often gets pushed aside. However, prioritizing sleep and downtime is one of the greatest ways to care for yourself. Schedule pockets of rest into your day—an early night with a good book, a power nap, or even a few minutes of quiet reflection. Rest can also look like a break from chaos - stepping away from electronics, saying no to too many events, or just sitting with our own thoughts. Rest is where we recharge, so don’t underestimate its power to make you feel more present, patient, and joyful.

3. Setting Boundaries During the Holiday Season

Holiday events, gatherings, and commitments can quickly overwhelm, making it essential to set boundaries with yourself and others. Whether that means declining an extra party, limiting time on social media, or creating space for personal time, boundaries help you honor your own needs. It’s okay to say “no” when something doesn’t align with your energy or priorities—this is a form of self-respect that others will come to admire. Boundaries may also include difficult decisions like who you would like to be with. If you don't have the mental energy to be with someone, it may be a healthy boundary to say "No" or "let's get together after the holidays".

4. Managing Holiday Expectations

We often carry unspoken expectations—how events should look, how we should feel, or how others should act. Managing these thoughts can help reduce pressure and foster joy. Remind yourself that perfection isn’t necessary to create meaningful memories. Let go of what isn’t realistic and focus on what feels right for you. Releasing expectations creates space for genuine moments of connection and happiness. I heard someone say that we want to have the grace to handle situations, but what we mean is imagined situations, things that haven't happened and may never happened. My friend said that we don't need grace for those things we need grace to manage our imagination! Ouch! So true. Make a commitment to watch your imagination and don't worry about all of the "what if's".

5. Asking for Help When You Need It

You don’t have to carry the holiday season on your shoulders. Whether it’s asking for help with cooking, delegating tasks, or sharing emotional challenges with a friend, leaning on others is an act of self-care and strength. Asking for help creates opportunities for others to show up for you, fostering connection and lightening the load for everyone involved. It also allows them a chance to have the joy that comes from helping and having a giving heart.

This holiday season, let your light shine brightly—not by doing more, but by taking care of yourself in ways that feel nurturing and restorative. Self-care is not selfish; it’s a gift to yourself and to those around you. When you prioritize rest, set boundaries, and let go of unrealistic expectations, you cultivate the space to be fully present and joyful. By honoring your needs, you inspire others to do the same, creating a holiday season that feels Merry, and bright, and truly meaningful.
